Identification of Financially Sustainable Models for Primary Maternity Care
The need:
The sustainability of primary maternity care in British Columbia has been in question over the last two decades, particularly in rural areas. A range of factors have contributed to this issue, such as the decline of family physicians providing obstetrics and the closure of rural surgical programs. Working to address this problem, the General Practice Services Committee needed help to identify effective and financially viable models of group maternity care to support sustainability of these essential services.
What we did:
We completed a series of consultations and in-depth interviews with diverse maternity care providers to identify what financially sustainable models of care can look like in diverse community settings. Sustainability challenges and potential solutions were also identified. Our work was provincial in scope, including consultation with representatives from each of the health regions, urban and rural communities, and areas with low, medium and high delivery volumes. Our findings and recommendations helped the committee to advocate for service delivery innovations and the need for provincial support to address urgent challenges.

What our client had to say:
“The General Practice Services Committee has engaged Elayne’s services on several occasions. Her work was thorough, efficient and always on time. She developed good working relations with both those being interviewed and those waiting to hear what she had found in the evaluation. Should the need for more evaluation arise, my first choice would be Elayne for her excellent evaluation skills, presentation skills and ability to develop strong working relationships.”
