Evaluation of Coaching Services to Promote Mental Health and Well-Being in School Communities
The need:
BC Children’s Practice Support Coaching program aims to build the capacity of school staff and mental health champions to implement health promotion activities in school communities. The long-term aim of this work is to increase protective factors, improve mental well-being and decrease the incidence of mental health challenges among children and youth in BC. BC Children’s Hospital wanted to understand the impacts of this work, as well as implement ongoing quality improvement activities.
What we did:
The first step of this project was to develop the evaluation design for the coaching program, which was completed in close collaboration with the program team. A mixed-methods evaluation design was then implemented, involving check-in surveys, in-depth interviews, focus groups, and impact questionnaires with diverse groups involved with the program. Utilization-focused and participatory evaluation approaches were adopted throughout the assessment process. Evaluation findings will be used by the program team to make mid-course corrections, set future strategic directions for the work, and substantiate funding applications.
